From time to time we get requests from members to publish a list of airlines that permit cell phone voice calls during flight. Unlike airline performance statistics and rankings, this type of information is not readily available from a single source, since very few airlines have actually implemented such a policy. So what airlines have considered, tested or implemented the use of cell phones in flight?

It's inevitable. Airlines will be offering in-flight Internet access in greater numbers over the next several months. As with the use of mobile phones in flight, surfing the web at 35,000 feet might pose some common courtesy issues that may lead to disputes among passengers about what is proper.

Frustrated flyers who feel bombarded by new fees often joke: "What's next, coin operated toilets on the plane?" That's usually followed by some comment warning against giving the airlines any ideas. Somewhere, sometime, someone must have joked about selling advertisements inside aircraft cabins. If the intention was not to give the airlines any ideas, it's far too late for that!

It appears that common courtesy can indeed be legislated. In early August, the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved by voice vote the "Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace (HANG-UP) Act," a bill that will make permanent the current ban on cell phone use during flights within the United States.

The first commercial inflight mobile phone call was made on an Emirates flight, en route to Casablanca, Morocco on March 21 this year.

Does this bring the day closer when every flight you take will feature an assortment of ringtones and fellow passengers loudly announcing, "Honey, I'm on the plane"? We do hope not, and from your feedback, we think you feel the same.
